Sign and encrypt

If you used Sign and encrypt instead of Encrypt only, use Decrypt and verify (or the decrypt tab that verifies). You should see that the signature is valid and which key signed, if the signer is in the store and not revoked.

If it fails

  • Wrong passphrase — try again; three failures here are not the same as vault lockout, but you still cannot open the file.
  • No secret key — the file was encrypted only to a public key you do not have.
  • Not an OpenPGP file — you selected the wrong input.
  • Expired key — encrypt is blocked; decrypt with a secret key may still work.
  • Revoked key — do not use it to sign; decrypt may still be possible if the secret material is in the vault.

Clipboard

You can also right-click a key in the store and decrypt OpenPGP text on the clipboard. The clipboard must contain a proper BEGIN PGP MESSAGE (or equivalent) block.

Next

When this round trip works, the vault and that key are usable. Continue with Folder Task, Text Task, or import the people you will encrypt to.
